About the review
EECA, in conjunction with the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), has been working to review the technical formulas used to calculate air conditioner cooling seasonal performance. The formulas are outlined and referenced in the New Zealand Energy Efficiency (Energy Using Products) Regulations 2002, and the Australian legislation.
The review focuses on technical issues with the inputs used to calculate cooling seasonal energy performance. These issues can result in star ratings that overstate the cooling energy efficiency of equipment in some cases.
Summary paper and next steps
Following the consultation a summary paper has been prepared which provides an overview and the next steps.
Australia has considered the feedback received through the consultation and has identified a proposed approach to address the cooling seasonal performance calculation issues.

New Zealand is yet to consider the proposed changes. New Zealand will follow a different process and timeline, but will work with Australia to maintain alignment, where possible, under the Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Programme, the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition agreement and the shared air conditioner market.
